Congratulations to Jose I. who represented Escobedo MS at the 2010 CCSD Bristlecone Storytelling event. It took place on Monday, May 10th at 6pm at the West Charleston Library. Jose did a great job retelling the folktale The Fishermans Wife!
Just in case you were not able to make it to the Poetry Jam- we have posted each of the poets that represented Escobedo. Click their name to watch the video clip. Way to go- Mackenzie, Terry, Stanley, Davariz and Brenan!
Just a reminder that the last day for book check-outs for the 2009-2010 school year will be May 14th. This will give Mrs. Baca two weeks to complete inventory and the end of the year procedures. You will be responsible for providing your own SSR book for class so you may want to purchase a book at the Scholastic bookfair or visit the Clark County Library after May 15th. Thank you for using the Escobedo Library!
The Scholastic Boofair is will take place May 3rd- May 14th. It will be open from 7:30-2:45pm daily. We will also have a Family Night on May 13th from 5:30-6:45pm (before the Beauty and the Beast play).
Our Escobedo Poetry Jam was a success. Thank you to those who participated. The poems were awesome! These students will be representing Escobedo at the 5th Annual CCSD Poetry Jam on April 26th from 6 to 8pm.

Nevada Reading Week March 22nd-26th, 2010
Theme: Pick a Book from the Reading Garden
Daily Activities-
Mystery Reader: 8:00am- During morning announcements Monday – Friday, a mystery staff member will read a short passage over the intercom. Each CLASS will vote on who they think the mystery reader is. A ballot for each day of the week is attached to this page. Ballots need to be sent down to the library by 9:00am. All classes with the correct answers will go into a drawing to win doughnuts. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 6th and the doughnuts will be given out Friday, April 9th.
Trivia Question: 8:00am- Students and teachers will be asked a trivia question by Mrs. Machin over the intercom regarding books (mystery passage, character or author). If ANYONE (not a class) knows the answer, he or she can bring it to the library before lunch that day. Please have the student write his or her answer on a piece of scratch paper with his or her name and grade. Mrs. Baca will draw one correct answer from each grade level each day. The winner will receive a $5.00 Barnes and Noble gift card. Winners will be announced the following day.
Drop Everything and Read (DEAR): The entire school will drop everything and read on Monday, March 22nd for the first 10 minutes of each class period. Listen for the reminder announcement each period.

A team of judges will select one winning door per hallway. P.E. and health count as part of the 200 hall. Each of the four winning classrooms will get a $25.00 Barnes and Noble gift card to be used to purchase new books for their classroom library. Please make sure the work is student centered. In order to be eligible for judging, the doors need to be completed by Friday, March 19th. Winners will be announced the 26th.
Bookmark Decoration Contest: The library will have blank bookmarks available for decoration. Students may decorate the bookmark incorporating the theme “Pick a Book from the Reading Garden” into the design (please, only one entry per person) and submit by the 25th. There will be one 6th, 7th, and 8th grade winner. ALL entries will be displayed in the library and a team of teachers/administrators will select the overall winner, who will pick a free book from the library.
Book Swap: On Wednesday, March 24th during both lunches, we will have a Book Swap. Teachers and students will bring in books they don’t want anymore and trade them for different ones. All books to be swapped must be turned in by Monday, March 22nd. For each book turned in, a ticket will be given. The tickets will be used to enter the Book Swap. Each ticket will be used to get one book (5 books brought in= 5 tickets= 5 books).
Guest Readers: A Guest Reader sign-up sheet will be available in the teachers’ lounge.
