Bristlecone Storytelling Festival

The Clark County School District storytelling festival is an exciting, voluntary program offered to fourth through twelfth grade students. The students practice skills that support the district English/ Language Arts/Reading curriculum through the use of storytelling. Students present thier stories to thier peers who in turn vote on the two best storytellers to represent our school at the region festival. The Esco Storytelling Showcase will take place on April 15th from 2:15-3:15pm in the Escobedo Library. Voting will take place at that time. The Northwest region festival will be celebrated on May 3rd, 4th and 10th, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Students who are interested in this activity need to see Mrs. Baca for more details.

Guidelines for the festival:

The heart of The Bristlecone Storytelling Festival is the schoolwide celebration of storytelling. The region festival is a continuation of this celebration and being chosen by one’s peers is an honorary accomplishment.

Participating grade levels: Fourth through twelfth grades -Participant format: Solo or Buddy

Maximum time for performance: Five (5) minutes

School contacts/ facilitator: Mrs. Baca

Categories for storytelling: Fairytales, Folktales, Legands, Tall Tales, Fables, and Myths.

All stories must be retold from published material.
Student tells story to school facilitator before schoolwide festival.
The use of props, music, costumes and puppets is not allowed. The focus is on the story, not the storyteller. Storytelling is an oral tradition, not drama. At the Region Festivals, students will tell their stories at a stationary microphone.
Stories should be told free of negative stereotypical characterization; therefore, it is recommended that accents and dialects not be used unless it is an integral part of the story.
Listeners choose who goes to the schoolwide festival.

Poetry Jam

The 5th Annual CCSD Poetry Jam will take place April 26, 2010. The Poetry Jam will be hosted by the CCSD Library Services Department and held at the West Charleston Public Library Auditorium. It will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We would like to invite and encourage our students to perform their original poetry at this upcoming event. This will be a night full of inspiration and educational entertainment.
Things to Remember:
-
Props, costumes, music and singing are not allowed.
-
No more than 5 poems per school.
-
Poetry should contain appropriate language only.
-
Students’ poetry must be their own written ORIGINAL poetry.
-
Poetry should be MEMORIZED.

The Poetry Jam is not a judged event. Each participating student will receive a 2010 Poetry Jam poster and a free poetry book sponsored by Ingram Library Services!
Escobedo will host it own Poetry Jam afterschool on Thursday, April 8th from 2:15-3:15pm. At that time 5 students that will represent Escobedo at the CCSD Poetry Jam will be chosen. If you are interested in participating, sign up by adding a comment below with your name.
